Shower Tile

Shower tile is used in the place of a full piece, 2-3 piece shower, or a shower surround. You can use shower tile on shower enclosures, also you can use shower tile with a shower base or shower pan, or with a shower liner and tiles on the floor. Of all the jobs you can do yourself, diy tiles on your shower would be the most difficult. If you have never installed tile of any kind before then I would recommend using a shower pan or shower base along with your shower tiles.

There are many variations of shower tile on the market today. And the colors you can use will warm your bathroom significantly. I am always impressed after doing some shower plumbing work and seeing just how good a simple neo angle shower enclosure looks with shower tile.

I have seen shower tiles with 12x12 tiles down to 1x1 tiles. The 1x1 tiles normally come in a 12x12 or 3x6 format. You can buy shower tiles that are meant for the floor or for the wall. The floor tiles can go on the wall, but the wall tiles should not go on the floor. When using shower tile make sure you use a water proof drywall prior to installing the tile. The different kinds of waterproof drywall are aquaboard, dense shield, and cement board. Cement board is the most expensive and is best used with the larger floor tiles. The reason you want to use this type on your walls is in case any water gets through the grout and behind the tiles. When this happens with regular drywall the drywall will swell and pop of the heavy floor tile. With cement board if water does get through the grout then the board can not swell.

When using shower tiles make sure you put a half inch pipe about 4-5 inches long in the thread for the shower head. Otherwise after the tile goes on you will not know where the shower arm will go. This can cause some problems that can easily be avoided in the first place.

Make sure to check the shower drain and shower faucets for any leaking in the rough in stage. There is nothing worse then a shower repair job.

Good luck with installing your shower tile.
