How To Run A Handyman Business
Are you a handyman looking to learn how to run a handyman business? If so this is the right article for you. This article will help you to run a handyman business. But is not meant to help you do the handyman work. Running a business and having the skills to do the work are two very different things. I used to run a plumbing business and worked with general contractors and other contractors, and some handyman companies. Some of these contractors were very good at what they do, others were not very good at all, but they all new how to run a business. The ones that were good always got many referrals, while the others never got very many at all.
Why do you want to run a handyman business? I have always wondered why someone would want to run a handyman business as compared with calling themselves contractors. Just by changing the name of your business from Kelly’s handyman business to Kelly’s contracting business changes how people look and feel about me and my company. If you are in an area that requires you to have certain skills to be a contractor for renovations or basement development then you might not have a choice but to say you are a handyman. But where I am from you do not have to have a ticket to own a contracting business.
Let’s Get Back to How to Run a Handyman Business
First thing you need to do is to decide on what you can and can not do in your handyman business. Do you have the skills to do everything or do you have to have a line up of contractors to help you perform these services? What size of job can you handle right from the beginning? When I started my plumbing company I had no other funds so I had to start with small service jobs that I got paid on very fast. Then as I grew I bought more tools which would give me more time and save me money from having to run to the rental company all of the time. Also as I grew I could take on bigger jobs and handle not getting paid for a longer period of time. Often I would work evenings to survive and days to build the company. After I started to get paid by some of my larger general contractors I did not work evenings as much. Since I was now able to handle getting paid every 30-60 days. The nice thing about the bigger jobs is I would make more money on those.
After deciding the above you can go to the city and get the required licensing to run a handyman business. This is mandatory, but check your area for the exact requirements. Now you need to set up a home office. Design a business card that you can hand out to everybody you know. Do you need a cell phone? Or maybe you need another home line for your handyman business. And what about a fax machine? Are you going to go into people’s homes and do small jobs by the hour? Or do you need to make up a quote for the client? Then you may want a contract as well. This can be a quick contract that you hand write in front of the client.
