House Painting DIY

Are you painting your house yourself? Have you painted anything yourself? House painting from a diy prospective is fairly easy, but does take time if you have never painted before.

First tape off all the trim, windows, and ceiling in the room you are about to paint. Are you replacing the flooring in the house? If so then you will not need drop clothes. But it may be best to remove the flooring before starting to paint. That way you will not scuff your walls after you have painted and now are going to remove the flooring.

After you have picked your colors you can now get started. If you are spraying the room, you will need to tape off a lot more then if you are just rolling and brushing. You will want to buy a roll of brown paper to tape off the doors and windows, and the ceiling. Also more tape will be need for the baseboards as well. This is a longer procedure, but spraying is so fast it is worth while.

House Painting diy with a roller

Using a roller is the most common practice when homeowners paint there own homes. You will need to use a brush when painting the corners of your rooms, and to cut in the ceiling and trim areas. If you plan on putting up crown molding later you will not have to tape or cut in the ceiling.

The most common practice when house painting diy with a roller is to roll your paint onto the wall in a N fashion or a W fashion, then go back and fill in that section. That way the paint turns on much smoother then if you did it all over the place.

You will want to finish a complete wall before stopping, otherwise you will see where you stopped and started again.

House Painting diy with a sprayer

You will need to cover yourself a lot more than with rolling. There is a lot more paint floating around with spraying then what there is with rolling, but spraying is faster and with a good hand you can get the paint more even.

In both cases you will want to wear a mask and goggles to protect yourself from the paint. Also you will want to do a primer coat and 2 coats of paint to cover everything nicely. And make sure you prep your walls prior to painting, there is nothing worse then having finished painting your house and you start to see cracks that should have been filled and sanded before you started to paint.
